China and the Netherlands

I was born in China and brought to the Netherlands by my adoptive parents. I don't know what my life in China would have been like, but I know that I benefit from the freedom I have here - as a queer person, a woman, an artist and someone who looks different from those around her.

Our flag grew from conversations about freedom. My teammates imagined birds and a pink sky. I thought of eyes looking at one another: seeing each other, paying attention and caring.

To me, freedom means being free in your mind. Having your own thoughts, making your own choices and shaping your own life. It means not being afraid of other people, the government, the police or strangers in the street - but also not being afraid of yourself or of who you are.

I hope everyone gets to experience that freedom.
